Artistic Exchange on Sensory Research

Everyone of us emits and has heard bowel sounds. They are proven to be informationally rich, yet they remain socio-culturally tabooed, stigmatized and largely hushed. In this artistic exchange, we attune to the sounds that guide us everyday but usually remain quiet. Together, we create a sound bath out of gut noise which affects our internal organs and encourages them to interact in multi-organ communication beyond semantics. We work with gastrointestinal live-recordings to amplify and modify the audible stuff that our intestines make. As such, we explore the Production Lab as the gut – or the so-called ‘second brain’ – of the ligeti center. 

This artistic exchange is divided into three parts. Firstly, we give an input on our research process at the intersection of medicine and sound art. Sharing the learnings from the collaboration between arts and sciences, we hope that creatives working on transdisciplinary projects can profit from our experience.  

Then, participants are invited to test and play around with the gigantic inflatable installation on site and contribute their very own gut sounds via special hydrophone recording technologies. Lastly, we will wrap everything up, reflecting on our experience with collectively sharing our intestinal sounds. With this playful exchange, we aim at destigmatizing and queering bodily sound and expression.

Veranstaltungsbeschreibung deutsch:

Schon als Fötus hören wir Darmgeräusche. Sie können uns so viel mitteilen und doch hören wir nicht hin, stigmatisieren sie sogar. In diesem künstlerischen Austausch wollen wir die Sounds gemeinsam hörbar machen und uns dafür sensibilisieren, welche Geräusche im Alltag oft verstummt bleiben. Gemeinsam kreieren wir ein Klangbad aus Darmgeräuschen, das auf unsere inneren Organe einwirkt und sie zu einer organ-übergreifenden Kommunikation jenseits der Semantik anregt. So erforschen wir auch das Production Lab als die Eingeweide der künstlerischen Arbeit – oder das so genannte ‚zweite Gehirn‘ – des ligeti zentrums. 

Dieser künstlerische Austausch teilt sich in drei Sections. Zuerst geben wir einen Einblick in unseren Forschungsprozess an der Schnittstelle von Medizin und elektroakustischer Forschung. Mit den Erkenntnissen unserer Kollaboration aus Kunst und Wissenschaft, wollen wir Impulse für die transdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit von Kreativschaffenden geben  

Im zweiten Schritt sind die Teilnehmer*innen eingeladen, die “inflatable” Installation vor Ort zu erkunden und mit Hilfe spezieller Hydrophon-Aufnahmetechniken ihre eigenen Darmgeräusche in die Installation einzubringen. Zum Abschluss werden alle Teilnehmenden ihre Erfahrungen im kollektiven Austausch/Klangbad ihrer Darmgeräusche reflektieren. Mit diesem spielerischen/intuitiven Austausch wollen wir Körpergeräusche und -ausdruck entstigmatisieren und “queeren”.
